The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Copenhagen

Taking advantage of one of the UK's few bank holidays and friend and I scooted over to Copenhagen for the Long weekend (May 2013).
Meet with sunny skies, a bit of wind and very friendly locals we explored the city.

After dropping everything at the hostel, we strolled down to the waterfront for lunch. Horrendously expensive (tourist prices huh!) but OH so pretty. Lunch was quite delicious though.

Naturally being in Denmark, we ate Danishes, plenty of Danishes. Probably a few too many Danishes.

The weekend also included a visit to Christiania, old navy barracks turned hippy commune, where we watched other tourists smoke cartoon sized joints (we just had a cider, honest). You can’t take photos inside, so this is what you see as you enter and exit the area.

Soaking up the sun and getting sun burnt at Tivoli Park while watching jazz. Also spent a large amount of time trying to find a ticket booth!

All that was fun and everything, however the highlight of my trip by far was the visit to the Little Mermaid Statue.
This statue pays homage to one of Copenhagen's son's Hans Christian Andersen and his fairy tale -  The Little Mermaid. For those who don't know the original tale (spoiler alert) Areal and Prince Eric Do Not live happily ever after. (look how little it is)

The statue is crawling with every tourist in Denmark, people are scrambling over the rocks to get closer to her in hope of getting shot of themselves. Perhaps the worst thing about travelling and visiting iconic places, you never get them to yourself.

We joined the circus and my friend skipped across the rocks in a rare break in the crowd, I was camera ready.

Then, in a moment only Mufusa would have been proud of and the worst case of photo bombing I have ever seen, a father thrust his child into the air, announcing him to the world. The sun broke through the clouds, birds stopped signing and ‘the Circle of Life’ started on a boom-box near-by.

Ok, so it might not have been that dramatic, but here is the picture, I’ll let you be the judge.

So that was my Copenhagen.
